Our 2007 Accomplishments

  • Monthly food and clothing distribution Mobile Pantries in Pescadero and La Honda (approximately 183 adults and 138 children) as well as distribution of emergency food supplies such as rice, beans and canned foods, for a total of over 37 tons of food each year.
  • Distribution of cold weather items such as rain gear, sleeping bags and blankets and bicycles for transportation (approximately 100 of each, every year).
  • Transportation coordination for more than 200 trips via SamCoast to health and other appointments in Half Moon Bay, Redwood City, San Mateo, and Palo Alto.
  • Referrals and case management for legal aid, immigration, citizenship, and taxes (approximately 10 callers each day for a total of 2,600 callers).
  • Family drop-in services for 125 individuals and 125 families each year.
  • Emergency financial aid for food, gas, utilities, medical/dental care, and rental assistance for approximately 10-12 families each year.
  • Enrollment in health insurance programs, such as Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids, Well program, and WIC for approximately 75 families each year.
  • Increase access to health care for more than 300 people through our partnership with San Mateo County Department of Health weekly mobile health van and Public Health Nurse posted at Puente 32 hours each week and transportation coordination for more than 100 health visits each year.
  • Translation assistance with school enrollment forms, legal documents, etc., as needed.
  • Academic enrollment assistance in pre-school, kindergarten, ESL, civics, and college, as needed.
  • Distribution of child-related donations such as children's clothing, diapers, and furniture.
  • Donation coordination and referrals.
  • Health and wellness services such as mental health counseling for families, youth and children, including the only counseling available in the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District; health screening for diabetes, TB, STDs, HIV; home visits by Puente's public health nurse; enrollment in wellness programs including WIC (Women, Infant & Children nutrition program); flu clinics; Madres Project that connects Mexican women to their culture and alleviates depression among isolated mothers.
  • Literacy programs such as ESL classes for Moms, intermediate Spanish classes, citizenship classes and a learning center open to the public several hours a week; Story Time for pre-school children.
  • Parent Involvement Program offers services to families with children 0-5 and pregnant women.
  • Community building activities, such as conversational classes for new Spanish learners led by local Spanish-speakers as well as opportunities for development of small, local businesses.
